Bailey’s Tailgate Talk – We Carry the Chains: Awareness That Doesn’t End in October

Earlier this month, The Bailey’s attended the Wall of the Fallen ceremony in Chattanooga, Tennessee — an annual event honoring towing operators who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This year, 19 new names were added to the Wall of the Fallen, bringing the total to hundreds of professionals who gave their lives helping others. It’s a sobering reminder of the real dangers towers face every day — and the responsibility we all share to keep awareness alive.

More Than a Phrase — It’s Who We Are

In our industry, we often say, ‘We carry the chains from here.’ But it’s more than a saying — it’s a commitment. Those chains represent strength, responsibility, and unity. Every time we hook up a car or light up a truck on the roadside, we’re carrying the weight of those who came before us — their work, their courage, and their memory.

Awareness Beyond October

October is recognized as Slow Down, Move Over Awareness Month — a time when towing companies, operators, and advocates across the country shine a light on roadside safety. But awareness can’t stop when the month ends. The people whose names were added to the wall this year didn’t work for recognition in October; they worked for the motorists who needed help and for their teammates waiting for them to come home.

We stand for the fallen by watching out for the living. That’s how we honor them — by keeping the message alive year-round.

Turning Awareness into Action

Across the country, towers have been lighting up their trucks in amber, wearing high-visibility gear, and sharing the message: Slow Down. Move Over. These simple actions help remind the public that behind every flashing light is a person — someone’s coworker, friend, or family member.

If each of us tells just one person — a customer, a friend, or a neighbor — about Slow Down, Move Over laws, that awareness multiplies. We share all kinds of things on social media every day — why not share something that could save a life? Together, we can turn awareness into action and help make our industry safer for everyone.
