Bailey’s Tailgate Talks: Choosing the Right Splice for Your Winch Line
One small detail on your winch line could be the difference between a clean pull—and a painful one. It’s all about the part of your winch line that often gets overlooked: the splice. Most operators know their preferred fiber or steel core, the right diameter, length, and hook style—but what about how the line is terminated? That’s where things like Turn Back and Flemish Splices come in.
Turn Back Splice
A Turn Back Splice loops the line back on itself and secures it with a swage. It’s simple, common, and cost-effective—usually the more affordable choice. But over time, especially with steel core cables, the internal tail inside the swage can work loose. That tail can poke through the swage, leading to frayed gloves, cuts, or worse—damaged hands.
Because Turn Back Splices are often bulkier, they can also catch on truck beds or hang up when threading the line through tight spaces.
Flemish Splice
A Flemish Splice, on the other hand, splits the rope and braids it back together before swaging. The result is a cleaner-looking, stronger termination that spreads the load more evenly. No exposed tails means safer handling over time.
And with its tighter, more compact profile, the Flemish Splice is much less likely to catch or snag in tight spaces—like threading under a truck or around tight corners.
Which One is Right for You?
Both splice styles have their place in the field. If you need a fast, budget-friendly option, a Turn Back Splice may do the trick. But if you want something cleaner, safer, and easier to manage in tight quarters, Flemish is the way to go.
When you’re ordering your next winch line, don’t overlook this small—but mighty—detail. Choosing the right splice can help protect your equipment, your team, and your hands.
